Kleť Observatory is intended for specialist astronomical research which entails observation conditions of the highest quality. It is built on the highest point in Bohemia and is famous for its exploration of asteroids, comets, and unidentified objects. Regular monitoring of the sky from Kleť began in 1968 and from 1994 the research team has also specialised in measuring the exact positions of asteroids flying near the Earth or crossing the Earth's route, asteroids in the distant parts of the Solar System, and newly discovered comets, including the comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, before its collision with Jupiter, or the comet Hale-Bopp. In this field the Kleť observatory is one of the top ten in the world.
